Student Center Expansion Update
Another student center expansion update? Sure, yeah like this is ACTUALLY going to happen. LAA, please don’t tease your loyal alumni any more! Well good news Livingston grads, this time, it’s for real!
The Board of Governors has passed the budget and the University will begin construction in the spring of 2008 for a project completion date of early fall 2009. The project is a $15 million dollar plan to expand and renovate portions of the Livingston Student Center. Roughly 19,000 new square feet will be added and about 15,000 square feet (or roughly 40%) of existing space will be renovated. The project will be funded through an upcoming University bond issue, which will be repayable through student fees.
The current multipurpose room, College Hall, will be refinished and reconfigured in order to better accommodate multiple functions including dinner banquets, meetings and theatrical/musical performances. The current food court will have expanded seating and there will be an increase in retail space, including a new bookstore. A coffee bar lounge will be added in addition to meeting rooms, office space and more multipurpose rooms on a second floor.
Also in the works is a new Livingston Dining Commons, which is envisioned as an upscale, modern environment that will become a major campus destination. Located on the lawn between Kilmer Library and Beck Hall, the commons will feature 13,000 square feet of dining space which will seat over 900 people. The current dining area, currently located in Tillett Hall, was built in 1969 holds 300.
The new dining facility is estimated at a cost of 24.7 million and should complete in conjunction with the student center renovations.
