Rutgers Names Public Safety Training Center for Kevin Appuzzio

The Kevin Appuzzio Training Center was named in honor of the LC Class of 2006 student, RU EMT and volunteer firefighter for East Franklin, who died attempting to rescue an elderly woman from her burning home on April 11, 2006. The center is located in the new Public Safety Center on Commerical Avenue in New Brunswick.

LAA Mourns the Passing of Alex Demouzos, Class of 2007

Alex Demousoz '07 was about to return for his final semester at Livingston College and was no doubt looking forward to graduation in May, following which he planned to take a year off and then apply to law school to study international maritime law. Those plans were cut tragically short by a car accident in Athens, Greece, where he was visiting his family over winter break.

Aurelio Clifton Landeros, Class of 1973

Aurelio Clifton Landeros '73 died August 26, 2006. Landeros, 54, taught English in the Plainfield School District, and also taught for 25 years at the South Second Street Youth Center. Funeral services were held August 30. At Livingston he was a member of the African dance troupe.

Kevin Apuzzio Receives Bloustein Community Service Award

Kevin Apuzzio, LC '06, who lost his life trying to save the lives of others trapped in a fire in April, posthumously received the 2006 Edward J. Bloustein Award for Community Service. The award was accepted by his sister, Leila, at the Rutgers University Alumni Federation's Meritorious Service Award dinner on September 15, 2006.

The East Franklin Volunteer Fire Company is planning a memorial to Kevin and is accepting donations.

LC Alumna Wins NJ Teaching Award

Lisa-Marie Batelli ’05 was one of four Graduate School of Education students who received the New Jersey Department of Education Commissioner’s Distinguished Teacher Candidate Award. Batelli, who graduated with highest honors, was cited for her excellence in social studies education.

The students were nominated by GSE faculty members for their outstanding achievement during their teaching internships, and will join 11 others in the state on May 1 when they are recognized on May 1at the New Jersey State Department of Education in Trenton.
